The walk-over at CrossFit Classic

Are you thinking maybe you can…get in shape? If the motivation strikes you! There’s no excuse for not being involved in awesome exercise. Let me share 3 good reasons. And remember no one can “sell” you on getting your game going. We all know that. You have to own the desire and the motivation to train. It’s an “inside” job.

Energy. It’s Bioenergetics. The Cheerios you had this morning, the pizza at lunch, the two bags of pretzels you consumed when you started to nod off at work and that pasta thing you created with the meat and the cheese… Everything you eat gets turned into sugars and fats. And if you eat too much and you eat a lot of the wrong stuff you’ll turn into the Pillsbury Dough Boy and happily off you go. Right or wrong? Sorry, I’m off track here.

You eat stuff in the form of carbs, proteins and fats containing chemical energy, and your body turns that complex chemistry into biologically usable fuel. This gives you the capacity to do your work –breathing, moving, talking, thinking, working?…everything you were designed to do.  That breakdown of big molecules of fuel into small molecules you can metabolize is the catabolic phase. Then you do exercise which in our case might be resistance training or gymnastics, putting our bodies in the enviable position of “tired.” (I dislike the phrase I often hear, “CrossFit kicked my ass!” Really Farnsworth, that’s what happened?) Your body needs to repair the damage. That kicks in the anabolic phase of your biological system. You rebuild, stronger, faster, more durable… Biologically you entered the complex phase where amino acids are converted to proteins. You paid your $20 for a class and this is what you get back.

Oops! We forgot something important. The experience. The mental component to exercise. We’ve never had someone walk out of the gym, knuckles dragging on the ground, frowning, shouting about the end of the world. Why not? Maybe because you’ve done your work in the company of friends you’ve come to know, with a coach you trust. Reason number 2. Training sucks for a few minutes but friends can be fun for years to come. We actually see each other outside the gym.

Pat yourself on the back for this next one. Did you know that human beings are inherently proactive and have a need for growth? Did you also know that the prime motivators for action mostly come from your internal complex processing of information, a self energizing internal idea engine with occasional input from the outside. Something external, “I’ve got to beat my buddy at tennis so I’ll do a little extra practice to sharpen up my back-hand…” You’re normal.

Understand this last item. After digging into the real goals of every potential player we meet the truth we share is that what we do is ultimately “about you”! You walk into the gym in one state of mind and walk out in a better state of mind. And there you go.

Hopefully it took you about the same time to read this as it would take to do 100 push-ups. Now, go do 100 push-ups. Then look in the mirror. Do you see a better person?
